Sulphur seniors age 60 and over are in for a treat On July 6 beginning at 9 a.m., itâs the Sixth Annual Christmas in July with a Twist. This yearâs theme is âSenior Ole Time Brunchâ. The event will be held at West Cal Event Center located at 401 Arena Rd. Brad Brinkley and Company Band will provide entertainment. Bingo prizes will be provided by the Calcasieu Parish Sheriffâs offices elderly services. Volunteers include Life Christian Academy, Our Lady School Art Class, Sulphur High Football team and Honor Society and Sulphur Sunrise Rotary. The event is sponsored by City of Sulphur, West Calcasieu Event Center, Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. RSVP to event hostess Jody Barrilleaux at (337) 794-3113 for food preparation. ....
The Westlake Group was one of the first companies to participate in the Sulphur Senior Center Partners in Elderly Program three years ago â and have continued their annual donation ever since. âItâs not the only way they help our seniors,â said Sulphur Senior Center Coordinator Cynthia Beverly. âThey have been generous in other ways, providing lunches and helping hand out commodities.â Beverly said 601 Maple St. in Sulphur is a Calcasieu Council on Aging meeting place but contributions to the Partners in Elderly Program are not used by that organization. Sulphur seniors benefit. âWeâve used the funds for bingo prizes,â Beverly said. âSometimes those prizes are basic needs such as toilet tissue or hygiene products. Weâve also taken seniors out to eat, nothing extravagant, but some of them just donât have the transportation or other resources to do that.â ....

About a dozen people gathered in the parking lot of the Sulphur Senior Center Tuesday to gather information about COVID-19 vaccines from June McBride, RN, Infection Prevention Coordinator with West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital. Attendees sat in cars for the presentation, which was made via a microphine and sound system due to social distancing protocol. McBride had a stuffed unicorn, sporting a mask and hand santizer, attached to her belt. She said âCovidicornâ is a visual reminder of the safety measures people must take, even after theyâve had the vaccine. McBride spoke briefly about how the vaccine, (taken in two doses either three or weeks apart depending on the brand) works and what side effects are possible. ....
