As soon as news broke last month that Jeremy Lin was signing with the Santa Cruz Warriors, I knew I wanted to do a story on what went into his decision to turn down seven-figure contracts in China to play in the G League.
It wasn’t until that article became one of my most read pieces in my six years at The Chronicle, however, that I realized just how big the interest level still is for Lin. Whether in the NBA, the Chinese Basketball Association or the G League, he attracts a global audience. ....

Projecting if struggling Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky can make the NCAA tournament

Projecting if struggling Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky can make the NCAA tournament

The NCAA Division I men s basketball selection committee revealed its top 16 seeds on Saturday and it was no surprise No. 1 Gonzaga - the preseason No. 1 team who has stayed atop the rankings all season - earned the top overall seed from the selection committee. No. 2 Baylor earned the second No. 1 seed with Big Ten rivals Michigan and Ohio State named the other top-seeded teams.
What is surprising is the lack of blue bloods represented. Not only in the latest reveal but quite possibly in the tournament as a whole. Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas, Michigan State and Indiana, schools accounting for 29 men s basketball championships, are all unranked and in jeopardy of missing this year s tournament, albeit in varying degrees and for different reasons. ....

Sure, the Zags can score, but the story lately for Gonzaga has been the stellar "D"

O
ver the weekend Gonzaga put up 100 points on the road against San Francisco, marking the fourth time this season the Zags have reached triple-digits in scoring. The Zags’ offense is elite, and they’ve made that clear all season long. Saturday against the Dons, despite the scoring output, the story was on the other end of the court.
“I’d rather talk about our defense,” head coach Mark Few said after the game. “I thought our defense was great tonight.”
It
was great, and the Zags held San Francisco to 61 points, but it wasn’t the first time that it’s been great. Gonzaga has been steadily improving on the defensive end all season long. Now, with half a month left until March, it’s fair to say that the Zags are elite on both sides of the ball, not just at the offensive end. ....

New bloods Gonzaga, Villanova still thriving amid pandemic

College basketball's bluebloods earned elite status through multiple championships, sustained traditions of winning and revolving doors of star players through their programs. A new group of teams has inched closer to basketball royalty and has remained relatively steady even as the coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc on the sport. Top-ranked Gonzaga, No. 5 Villanova and a handful of other programs may not have the historical resumes to compare to the bluebloods, but consistent success over the past decade — in some cases, more — puts them in a new category of dominating teams. ....
