One former Canadian finance minister is urging Chrystia Freeland to rein in some of her governmentâs planned COVID-19 recovery spending.
John Manley, a one-time finance minister and deputy prime minister and current co-chair of The C.D. Howe Instituteâs Fiscal and Tax Working Group, said in an interview on Tuesday that Freeland has a lot of political capital and should use it to get more targeted recovery spending than what was proposed in the governmentâs Fall Economic Statement.
âThis prime minister can not afford to lose another finance minister,â Manley said of Justin Trudeau, who is just six months removed from previous finance minister Bill Morneauâs resignation. âSo, Miss Freeland is going to have to be tough with him and say ânoâ to some things that he might like to do and face the conseque ....

Within emerging literature on the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on employment and earning levels, UBI has been elevated to the status of a panacea that could ease all the social and economic ills that societies are encountering during the crisis.
Ardent advocates of UBI have argued that it has the potential to reduce poverty, narrow income inequality gaps, address automation, eradicate the stigma associated with collecting government assistance, enhance the social well-being of citizens, diminish dependency and streamline existing complex and fragmented social transfer programs and public services. ....
