Alberta Working to Expand Natural Gas-Fired Petrochemical Projects with Inter Pipeline Grant
The Alberta government on Monday awarded a C$408 million ($326 million) grant to Inter Pipeline Ltd. for new industrial projects that use natural gas and its liquid byproducts as raw materials.
Inter Pipeline is receiving the grant through the Alberta Petrochemicals Incentive Program (APIP) in three annual installments after the scheduled completion of its C$3.9 billion ($3.1 billion) Heartland Petrochemical Complex near Edmonton in early 2022.
The plant would consume 22,000 b/d of propane to make 525,000 tons/year of polypropylene, an intermediate mainstay for manufacturing a wide array of synthetic end products from auto and television parts to medical and sports hardware. ....

A BW Rhine oil tanker exploded early Monday morning at the Saudi Arabian port of Jeddah. The explosion forced 22 sailors on board to flee, though no injuries were reported.
Oil climbed above $50 a barrel, despite the explosion raising concerns about the region’s stability. The incident follows another similar occurrence three weeks ago, when an oil tanker was damaged in a possible attack at the Saudi terminal of Shuqaiq.
Since the end of October, oil has risen more than 30 per cent amid vaccine breakthroughs and an OPEC+ deal on production. Furthermore, Iran is planning to nearly double output in the next year, in anticipation of the easing of sanctions from the United States once president-elect Joe Biden takes office. ....
