OTTAWA - A federal watchdog says he is investigating Pornhub over potential privacy breaches related to exploitive content posted online, as concerns around non-consensual use of images in a digital world continue to mount.

Abbotsford MP and UFV philosophy professor weigh in on pros and cons of proposed Anti-terrorism Act

Print Edition: March 25, 2015
Bill C-51, the proposed Anti-terrorism Act, has been criticized by its opponents as unconstitutional since it was first introduced and read at the House of Commons on January 30.
The Conservative Party of Canada calls the bill an extension of existing legislation like the Combatting Terrorism Act and the Nuclear Terrorism Act, and is a step towards better countering terrorist threats.
However, the bill is criticized for its use of the phrase “terrorism in general,” which opponents argue is too vague, therefore allowing for a possibly unfair interpretation of what is deemed terrorist activity.

Tech company engaged in mass surveillance

“What Clearview does is mass surveillance and it is illegal,” Privacy Commissioner of Canada Daniel Therrien said. “It is completely unacceptable for millions of people who will never be implicated in any crime to find themselves continually in a police lineup.”
They said Clearview AI’s technology allowed law enforcement and commercial organizations to match photographs of unknown people against the company’s databank of more than three billion images for investigation purposes.
That included millions of Canadian images, they said, adding people did not place their images online for that collection purpose, meaning the law was broken.
The American Civil Liberties Union has called such collections, ‘faceprinting.’  ....

Investigators say Clearview AI Had No Consent for Images Given to Police
SHARE ON:
Have you been in a police lineup recently?
Well, actually, that is a possibility thanks to powerful facial recognition technology.
Through Clearview AI’s facial recognition tool your photograph may have turned up during an investigation into a crime.
That was highlighted in an investigation by the Privacy Commissioners of BC, Canada, Alberta, and Quebec into whether Clearview AI violated personal privacy laws in Canada.
They found that Clearview’s collection of billions of images of people from across the Internet represented mass surveillance and was a clear violation of the privacy rights of Canadians. ....
