When President Joe Biden outlined his legislative priorities during his first address to Congress last month, notably absent was a major campaign promise: a public health insurance option. Instead, his current health reform proposal will funnel $200 billion more to private insurance companies to subsidize premiums, without any requirement that they cap out-of-pocket costs or eliminate them altogether.
As a result of Biden s approach, states have been left to introduce public option legislation themselves, in the process taking on some of the nation s largest and most politically organized businesses. From coast to coast, health insurance companies, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies are using every tactic at their disposal to block states from passing public option legislation. ....

Connecticut lawmakers pushed a bill that would permanently keep absentee ballot boxes outside town halls. The boxes were used extensively in the August primary and November general election in 2020 as many voters wanted to avoid voting in person during the coronavirus pandemic. These ballot drop boxes were installed outside West Hartford Town Hall.

House Democrats and Republicans clashed in dueling news conferences Thursday about whether expanding absentee voting would lead to fraud, then they largely united behind another ballot access issue: endorsing a constitutional amendment allowing in-person early voting.
The House voted 115-26 to place the constitutional amendment before voters next year. If passed at referendum in 2022, it will allow the General Assembly to decide in 2023 whether to offer early voting, as is available in 44 other states.
“We’re not deciding anything today. That’s ironic,” said House Speaker Matt Ritter, D-Hartford, noting the resolution before the House only allowed a referendum. “All we’re doing is letting the voters of Connecticut decide.” ....
