USVI's Krygsveld Wins 28th International Optimist Regatta

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Fourteen-year-old Tanner Krygsveld focused on maintaining his lead as he started the third and final day of racing in the 28th International Optimist Regatta (IOR), hosted at St. Thomas Yacht Club (STYC), June 18 to 20. The St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands sailor led the event from the first day, and despite a strong field of fellow competitors representing 6 nations – Antigua, Canada, the Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico, U.S.A, and all three U.S. Virgin Islands – and winds 15- to 18-knots, Krygsveld finished the day’s first race in second and ultimately won the 10-race regatta by 16 points. This makes Krygsveld the third U.S. Virgin Islander in the IOR’s nearly three-decade history to champion the event, with Cy Thompson, Teddy Nicolosi and Mia Nicolosi having done so in 2000, 2015 and 2016, respectively. ....

International Optimist Regatta set for US Virgin Islands in June

The largest annually held little boat regatta in the Caribbean, the International Optimist Regatta (IOR), is scheduled for June 14-20, 2021 in St Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.
It was started in 1993 by a group of St Thomas Yacht Club (STYC) sailors and now hosts Oppie sailors from across the world.
It is also a significant driver of grass roots dinghy sailing in the Caribbean after McLaughlin Boat Works, who provided the regatta’s charter boats, made the boats available afterwards at affordable prices – sailing programs throughout the Caribbean bought them and took them home. ....

Competitive and COVID-safe yacht racing returns in a new normal way to St. Thomas in 2021. The St. Thomas Yacht Club (STYC) Board of Directors is pleased to announce next year s dates for two of the Caribbean s favorite regattas and the second annual of a soon-to-be major international regatta.
Specifically, the St. Thomas International Regatta (STIR) will be held March 26-28; the STYC Invitational, May 14-16; and the International Optimist Regatta (IOR), June 14-20.
Sailing and yachting play an integral role in our overall tourism product and make a vital contribution to the U.S. Virgin Islands economy. Our warm weather, beautiful waters and exceptional marine facilities make us an ideal choice for sailing and yachting. The Territory has robust COVID-19 protocols in place, and we commend the St. Thomas Yacht Club for working collaboratively to keep our residents, visitors, and competitors safe. ....
