Kaganzev Receives April 2021 New Jersey's Heartland Hero Award

Kaganzev Receives April 2021 New Jersey’s Heartland Hero Award
Alex Kaganzev has been thanklessly working in the background and has restored hope to individuals for more than a decade. He started Project Thanksgiving to collect and distribute turkeys, donations, and food for families in Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem counties. In 2020, Project Thanksgiving afforded over 200 veterans and their families a Thanksgiving meal.
His show of support and care for the community does not stop there. He initiated an Angel Tree through Project Santa, a partnership with the Vineland Public Library, to collect gifts for children in town during the holidays. The children create a similar ornament with their name, age, and gender on it. Community residents select one of the decorations of their choice from the Christmas tree at the library and then, in exchange, donate a gift to that child to spread holiday joy.

Cindi Cooke remembers the day last March when Gov. Phil Murphy announced his statewide stay-at-home order and closed all non-essential businesses.
“I received that very first night a phone call from a homeless gentleman and he was panicked,” the Millville resident recalls.
He had been kicked out of the place where he was staying because of coronavirus fears and needed help. Cooke met up with him and provided dinner.

Angela Fields sees the writing on the wall.
This time last year, the organization she runs out of Hunterdon County — one of the wealthiest counties in the nation — was finding housing for four desperate families from their community who had nowhere to go.

Year in Review: Kindness and perseverance thrive despite pandemic

Unprecedented times.
Flatten the curve.
When encouraged to shut down and stay home to quell the spread of COVID-19, many in the Greater Cumberland County region didn’t abandon their drive to help others or achieve new goals. I've selected about two dozen stories I wrote during 2020 that highlight how small acts of kindness made a big difference.
The collection includes a businessman who settled outstanding school lunch debts, a deaf dog encouraging acceptance, and the Class of 2020 who joyfully embraced their non-traditional graduation celebrations.
May their compassion, resilience, and perseverance serve as inspiration to us all in the new year.
