State Requests More Time For Spaceport Camden Review; County Hires Former Kemp Aides

Updated at 5:20 p.m. Friday
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has asked for more time to release an impending decision about a proposed spaceport in South Georgia’s Camden County, citing among other reasons, “the complexity of the proposed project.”
The state agency is required to review whether the proposal violates any Georgia laws protecting the coastal environment.
Camden County is proposing to build a commercial spaceport on the coast in Woodbine, Georgia, featuring a rocket launch trajectory over salt marsh and tidal waters, as well as the Cumberland Island National Seashore. A spaceport operator license would not allow the county to actually launch rockets; each launch would still require an additional federal license. ....

We’ve had a taste of this over the past few days, but now it’s official: For the next two months, Georgia becomes the center of the world. The state’s two U.S. Senate races are going to a January 5 runoff; the outcome almost certainly will determine control of the chamber, and therefore of the legislative branch. If both Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock win their races and if two other not-yet-called contests, in North Carolina and Alaska, go to Republicans, as is expected Democrats will have 50 Senate seats, with vice president Kamala Harris able to cast a tie-breaking 51st vote. 2020 has been a wild ride, no? Now, in the year’s final turn, that entire vehicle careens down I-75 and crashes into Georgia like a flaming dump truck. ....

In Fernandina, just south of Cumberland, British soldiers pinned to trees a proclamation by Vice Adm. Alexander Cochrane, Cockburn’s superior: All enslaved people and their families disposed to emigrate from the United States were welcome aboard British ships where they could choose between enlisting or being sent as free settlers to a British colony. The news spread from one plantation to the next.
“Each plantation [on Cumberland] had British officers posted at them,” said Pauline Wentworth, who has worked as a ranger for 22 years at Cumberland Island National Seashore, which encompasses the majority of the island. “This gave an opportunity for enslaved people to take advantage of Cochrane’s proclamation.” ....

The reintroduction of 32 bobcats to an island off the coast of Georgia more than three decades ago created an ideal experiment to examine the accuracy of a genetic-modeling technique that predicts extinction of isolated wildlife populations.
That s the conclusion of Penn State researchers who continue to monitor the bobcat population on Cumberland Island National Seashore, and who conducted a study comparing and contrasting the Cumberland Island bobcats to a population of bobcats on Kiawah Island off the coast of South Carolina. ....
