A trip behind the Iron Curtain

Editor’s note:
In this column, former journalist Bob Robinson remembers a trip behind the Iron Curtain to the Soviet Union.
Bob Robinson
It was a cold and rainy evening at LaGuardia Airport in New York City when we boarded the overnight TWA flight to Brussels, Belgium and then on to Moscow. I was the youngest of 25 Tennesseans traveling to the Soviet Union as part of President Dwight Eisenhower’s People to People Goodwill trip. It was an agriculture mission led by the director of the Tennessee Dairy Association.
Most in the group were state legislators, including my dad, Sen. Herman Robinson of Elizabethton. I was a student at the University of Tennessee and a news reporter for WBIR Radio and TV Station in Knoxville. The 1963 trip was paid by each participant, approximately $2,500, which included airfare, hotel and food, a cheap price compared to today’s standards. ....

The Capitalist Offensive

The Capitalist Offensive
The British state is no stranger to violence.
In the last two decades, UK armed forces have bombed and murdered in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya and the Government is now enacting a law to prevent British troops from being accused of war crimes. Britain has sold munitions and other military equipment around the globe, fuelling such conflicts as the continuing war in Yemen (Britain is no longer the world’s third-biggest arms dealer as it was two decades ago, but it is still in the top eight, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute).1 Currently, perhaps in a desperate attempt to appear significant in the wake of the Brexit débacle, it is seeking to project its military power in the Black Sea by sending two warships amid ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine.2 ....

The Working Class Response

The Working Class Response
As we said in the last issue of Aurora, bosses are seizing advantage of increasing unemployment to reduce ‘labour costs’. It is encouraging to see a growing number of workers refusing to take this lying down.
Certainly the insulting 1% pay rise nurses got for their key role in the Covid line of fire speaks volumes. When taking inflation into account this is a real-terms pay cut. Even the nurses union has been making motions towards strike action. Now every wage worker can expect their pay and conditions to come under threat.
Amongst those already taking action are around 300-400 bus drivers in Manchester employed by Go North West. They have been on strike for weeks trying to resist the company’s attempt to cut sick pay and force them to work longer hours for less by firing and rehiring them on worse contracts. Throughout March, British Gas engineers staged walk outs to protest the same dirty trick. Across the country, electricians hav ....

The Nationalist Poison Behind Brexit

The Nationalist Poison Behind Brexit
Far from “getting Brexit done”, the pantomime goes on. There are so many issues that both EU and UK want to extend the period of grace before the full treaty is implemented.
For the UK problems are mounting by the day. Freight volumes are down by 68% in the first month of Brexit. And as for “freeing the UK from bureaucracy” it has increased in both complexity and size. To export a fish to the EU requires six forms to be completed. Lorries are deliberately returning to the UK empty to avoid the paperwork. Irish hauliers are avoiding the UK and go directly to France. Some EU manufacturers will no longer supply the UK due to the bureaucracy and Northern Ireland is experiencing food shortages. Despite Johnson’s bluster there IS a customs border down the Irish Sea. This has only inflamed the Ulster Unionists who took “Ulster says NO” to the extreme of opposing every deal on offer! They then set their paramilitary thugs to intim ....
