JFilm's 2021 season showcases Jewish-themed films from around the world | The Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle

“Aulcie” (Photo courtesy of JFilm)
“Aulcie”
English/Hebrew; 74 minutes
More than 40 years before NBA superstar Amar’e Stoudemire suited up for Maccabi Tel Aviv, another American-born basketball player took Israel by storm. After being cut from the New York Knicks in 1975, Aulcie Perry, a 6’10” overlooked center, arrived in the Jewish state. Perry’s ability to lead Maccabi Tel Aviv to two EuroLeague Championships, and captivate a country’s heart during nine seasons of play, begins director Dani Menkin’s 74-minute film. As the documentary unfolds, however, the Israeli hero’s professional career wanes as his struggles rise.
Relationship difficulties and drug addiction plague the international superstar ending his meteoric climb from Newark’s gang-filled streets. Menkin relies on interviews with Tal Brody, an American-Israeli basketball player, as well as conversations with teammates and coaches in telling Perry’s redemption story. Whether “Aulcie” hits that shot or suffers a near miss largely depends on how one views Menkin’s portrayal of Perry’s quest to explain himself and reconnect with family. Unlike the EuroLeague Championships, life doesn’t keep score and it’s often tough to tell who wins even after the buzzer sounds.

'Dancing With The Stars' Season 30 Cast: Who Could Participate In Possible All-Stars Run?

‘Dancing With The Stars’ Season 30 Cast: Who Could Participate In Possible All-Stars Run?
02/09/21 AT 4:50 PM
The Australian version of “Dancing With the Stars” will be coming back for a special “All-Stars” run after it was initially canceled—and now, there has been some curiosity about whether or not the U.S. version of the show, which has yet to be renewed for a 30th season but is not expected to face cancellation, could also revisit the idea of an All-Stars season.
The ABC reality competition series previously did an All-Stars run in the 15th season, which aired in 2012, and brought back various celebrities from the first 14 seasons of the show—including various competitors, finalists, runners-up and even a few Mirrorball champions—who tried for a chance at winning the coveted trophy, with either new partners or the ones they competed with previously. In the end, Melissa Rycroft, who had been a finalist in Season 8, won with partner Tony Dovolani, beating out Season 8 champion Shawn Johnson and Season 1 champion Kelly Monaco in the process.

Tango Shalom

It’s not often one thinks of rabbis and their wives as amorous entities, but that’s the first thing you’ll notice when Moshe Yehuda (Jos Laniado) and his spouse Raquel (Judi Beecher) are introduced in mid-passionate embrace. (It's a family affair all around: Jos co-wrote the script with brother/co-star Claudio Laniado and co-star Joseph Bologna, the late husband of Renée Taylor. And that's Jos' daughter Justine Laniado playing his onscreen daughter Shira). It’s important to establish a strong, faith-based romantic relationship between the two, because it’s about to be put to the test. With the wolf barking at the door of Moshe’s Hebrew school, the Hasidic rabbi takes to the pavement in search of an alternative way to feed a family of five. Dance instructor Viviana Nieves (Karina Smirnoff) knows that with the right partner — perhaps a Grand Rabbi that has her by a good 20 years and who, by Talmudic law, is not allowed to touch any woman other than his wife — they’d stand a good chance of winning cash prizes on Dance-TV’s first-ever Tango Contest. (Duck! Here comes another trope: her share of the loot would fund an operation for her sick daughter.) Servant of God that he is, Yehuda will stop at nothing to get the answer to his prayers that he wants to hear, and that includes visits to a Catholic priest (that’s Bologna beneath the white Panama), a Muslim imam (Yasir Sitara), and a traveling Sikh mystic (Hamza Zaman) for advice. Rather than risk becoming the topic of Crown Heights chit-chat, Yehuda’s prayers to HaShem are answered in the form of... well, you'll have to see the movie to discover what came between the dancers that prevented them from touching. He soon becomes a shanda, the eyes of God (and internet subscribers) waiting for him to do anything even remotely “unholy.” The opening nasal salvos lobbed between Moshe’s blubbering mother Deborah (Renée Taylor) and her equally adenoidal in-law-to-be Leah (Lainie Kazan) were pushing things in the direction of Sitcom City, but once the characters took hold and the direction picked up its pace, there was a good, non-denominational time to be had by all. This was to be the last collaboration between a prolific husband and wife quadruple-threat duo: the writing, acting, producing, and directing team of Renée Taylor and Joseph Bologna (

Cloris was paired with professional dancer Corky Ballas, the father of two-time mirrorball winning champion Mark Ballas. At the time, Corky was the oldest of the professionals and Cloris was the oldest person to compete on
