JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. Health departments throughout the St. Louis region say they are begging the state for COVID-19 vaccines.
One St. Louis area county feeling the squeeze is Jefferson County where the percentage of people vaccinated is lower than every county around it, according to state data.
Part of the problem could be that the county is not big enough to have multiple large hospitals to help with vaccine distribution and not small enough for the state to set up a National Guard-run mass vaccination site meant to help rural areas. ....

Driver sustains serious injuries after crashing vehicle through fence at Festus salt storage building

A section of between 35- and 40-feet of fence at the Festus Public Works Department was damaged in a crash Tuesday.
A 19-year-old Crystal City man sustained serious injuries early Tuesday (Dec. 22) when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed through a chain-link fence at the Festus Public Works salt storage building along North Fifth Street, authorities reported.
Festus Police Sgt. Jessica Griffaw today (Dec. 23) said the incident occurred about 12:30 a.m. Armondre Towsend was driving a 2014 Kia Forte westbound on the road, she said.
âHe appears to have lost control of the vehicle and struck the fence,â she said. ....

Mercy Jefferson staff get county's first COVID-19 vaccines | Coronavirus

Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City received a shipment of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines today (Dec. 15), and 10 staff members were vaccinated.
The first person to receive one was Jennifer Holt, 44, of Festus, a nurse clinician for the emergency department.
âIt was an honor to be the first nurse in this community to get the vaccination,â she said.
Holt said she was not nervous about receiving the first dose of the two-dose vaccine.
âI have full faith in this,â she said. âIt didnât hurt.â
Holtâs vaccination was met with cheers and applause from co-workers.
âI think itâs important for everyone to get the vaccine so we can minimize the transmission of this virus and protect others in this community,â Holt said. ....

Mercy Hospital Jefferson receives COVID-19 vaccines

Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City is scheduled to receive its first shipment of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday (Dec. 15) and then begin administering it to hospital staff, possibly the same day, Mercy spokesman Joe Poelker said.
The Jefferson County Health Department does not expect to receive any of the Pfizer vaccines being shipped across the country and the state.
However, Health Department officials hope to receive the Moderna vaccine once it is approved by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA), said Jeana Vidacak, public health preparedness coordinator for the Health Department.
Vidacak said the Health Department does not have the proper refrigerators to store the Pfizer vaccine. ....

Even though hospitals are becoming increasingly overwhelmed due to the rising number of COVID-19 patients to care for, staff members at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City say the news that vaccinations soon will be available gives them hope.
Dr. Karthik Iyer, Mercy Jefferson chief medical officer and intensive care unit medical director, said the vaccines are a welcome development in the fight to control the virus.
âI feel the morale is better than what we would have seen a couple of months ago, and I think the news about the vac
cine has a lot to do with it,â he said. ....
