Preliminary results from the Southwest Florida Water Management District show an 18% decline in seagrass across Sarasota Bay, Roberts Bay and Little Sarasota Bay from 2018 to 2020. The decline equates to loss of 2,300 acres of seagrass.
“A healthy bay leads to a healthy bay, so everything is tied together,” Sarasota Bay Watch Secretary John Ryan said. “Having healthy seagrass is really important to our bay ecosystem because about 75% of marine life have some part of their life in seagrass, so this is not great.” ....

Blackburn Bay showed a slight increase of about 13 acres, but the total acreage of seagrass coverage in the area is down from 12,853 in 2018 to 10,540 in 2020, officials reported. Seagrass levels have not been so low since 2008. ....

Despite selling at a $3 million discount, the $16.5 million sale of a waterfront mansion on a barrier island south of Sarasota, Florida, tied for the most expensive deal in the county.
The sale of the five-bedroom, seven-bathroom residence on Casey Key sold for the same amount as the previous record holder, the sale of a classical-style mansion in late 2020, according to the Multiple Listing Service. But the Casey Key deal, which closed on Wednesday, was the priciest property in the ZIP Code, selling at about 46% more than the next most expensive home there. ....

The Nokomis property on Casey Key has 174 feet of frontage on Blackburn Bay as well as a stunning view along 164 feet of Gulf of Mexico frontage. The 4,866-square-foot four-bedroom, five-bath home has unobstructed waterfront views, a tennis court, pool, private boat house dock and lift.
The Colonial Caribbean-style residence is at 2613 Casey Key Road, according to a news release from Premier Sotheby’s International Realty. The home had been owned by Charles and Wendy Weiss since 2007, Sarasota County Property Appraiser’s records indicate. ....
