Black Studies Professor Sharon Tettegah Joins NSF Scholars Group

Joining the cohort is a perfect fit for Tettegah, whose career and scholarly work have focused on the intersections of social justice and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). ICQCM, meanwhile, aims to broaden the participation of underrepresented groups in data science and other STEM fields.
“During my tenure as an ICQCM scholar I plan to learn and apply my new knowledge to Black studies at UCSB,” she said. “My commitment as a faculty member is to learn all that I can so that underrepresented minority students at UCSB will know that there are many tools available to examine all types of data. ....

Director of Black Student Research Center discusses S.T.E.M. Initiatives

Over the past two decades, American universities have become more racially diverse. From 1996 to 2016, the percentage of undergraduate students of color in the United States increased from 29.6% to 45.2%, according to a report by the American Council on Education.
Currently, Tettegah and her collaborators have been gathering data from students as part of a broader self-assessment of UCSB’s current climate and practices.

Despite these gains, however, S.T.E.M. fields remain skewed, with Black and Hispanic students significantly underrepresented. Zooming in on the demographics of faculty, staff and administrators in these fields, the majority of positions are filled by white people. ....

Once again, Nigerian professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 are emigrating abroad. Those who are married go with their families. Economic upheaval at home and an almost out of hand national security challenge explain why these young citizens choose to vote with their passports. But this is also a global phenomenon. Whether in Africa, Asia or the Americas, we are dealing with what Patrick Gilligan has described as the ‘No Nation’ Generation whose members “are breaking ties with their birth countries and seeking a more affordable and better standard of living overseas.”
The leading countries in which most of these professionals seek to reside, going by the latest MoveHub global survey, are the United Kingdom, Australia, US, Spain, Canada, France, New Zealand, Germany, Ireland and Portugal. At number 16, the only African country on the list is South Africa. According to the survey, “the majority chose better job prospect ....
