CHICAGO (WLS) ABC 7, Chicago s Number One station for news, presented a virtual town hall examining the long lasting effects of the discriminatory real estate and banking practices of redlining. ABC 7 s Leah Hope moderated this hour-long event available on abc7chicago.com Thursday, February 11 at 2:00 PM.
Redlining meant that Black residents, despite having all the necessary collateral and ability to pay, could not secure a home for purchase because of their neighborhood color designation. The historic practice of redlining, with some roots in Chicago s real estate and financial community, had lasting consequences that not only kept Blacks out of desirable neighborhoods, but was instrumental in stifling school integration, opportunities for economic development, corporate development and access to healthcare. ....

Carnegie Corporation of New York organized its first staff trip to East and South Africa in 1927, visiting 124 educational institutions in all. Corporation president Frederick Keppel and his team were “continually drawing attention to the pitifully unsuitable textual and illustrative content of the primers and educational posters used little English boys in straw hats, sailing little boats at the seaside.” Keppel was moved to make a $5,000 grant to support the publication of more suitable teaching materials. ....

Employees in Google s AI research division have delivered a set of demands to management after the recent ousting of AI ethicist Timnit Gebru from the company.
Employees ask that Google offers Gebru her position back at a higher level, while demanding that a manager is removed from the reporting chain.
They also ask for Google to publicly commit to academic integrity, and strengthen the company s Ethical AI team.
