The FSU Alumni Association was recognized with a 2021 CASE District III award and received Grand Gold in the category of Alumni/General Interest Magazines produced two times per year for its biannual alumni publication, VIRES magazine.
Mackenzie Alston, Ph.D. (Department of Economics) was selected for a post-doctoral fellowship from the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) to support diversity in economics. The one-year fellowship is open to early-career economists from historically underrepresented demographics within the economics profession and to researchers studying diversity issues.
Alex Meyer, Ph.D. (Department of Psychology) received an award for Distinguished Early Career Contribution to Psychophysiology from the Society for Psychophysiological Research. ....

COVINGTON, Ky. — Covington is considered the most diverse city in Northern Kentucky and now, representation in local political positions is finally beginning to reflect that.
Ron Washington, vice mayor of Covington said he remembers when the city was separated by Madison Avenue, east and west.
The eastern side of the city, he said, was predominantly populated by African Americans.
Michelle Williams, Covington City commissioner, remembers it well too.
Everyone would say, yeah, you don t belong on the other side of the railroad tracks, she said. That was for the other side. ....

Do college students feel heard by professors and administrators on their campuses?


 
Inviting feedback from college students doesn’t necessarily mean they feel heard just as spelling out campus department functions online doesn’t guarantee students know whom to turn to when an issue arises. With higher ed financial models relying on satisfied students who stay and complete their studies, those realities spell trouble.
Add COVID-19 to the mix, and there s even more reason for concern. Although higher ed institutions transitioned quickly last year to teaching and supporting students from a distance as COVID kept them apart and continued to enhance their offerings as pandemic life settled in many students have struggled to access needed help remotely. ....

Study: Covid-19 communications featuring racially diverse physicians can improve health outcomes for communities of color

In a new study by MIT professors Esther Duflo, Ben Olken, and Abhijit Banerjee, and physicians Marcella Alsan and Fatima Cody Stanford, along with other doctors and economists, public health video messages featuring a racially diverse set of physicians were found to decrease knowledge gaps about Covid-19 symptoms and transmission generating important lessons about how we communicate about, and work to mitigate the effects of, the virus. Study results also indicated that, for Black individuals, watching a video with a racially concordant (Black) physician increased the degree to which they sought out more information about Covid-19. ....
