Editor’s Note: For the remainder of the school year, The University Star will take on “The 11% Project”, an examination of Black students at Texas State through History, Election, Hometowns, Activism, Creatives and 10 years from now.
It took Tafari Robertson two years post-graduation to process the trauma he endured as a student at Texas State.
“In the year [following] everything that happened on campus.I had graduated, but I was still in San Marcos,” Robertson says. “That was just, like, a really rough year for me because it was leaving the activist space. You know, it s hard to look back on and feel like you really did everything you could have.” ....

Sistahs on The Frontlines: Faye Wilson Kennedy – An Activist In Action — The Sacramento Observer

Faye Wilson Kennedy has been on the frontlines of local advocacy since her high school years. She says she enjoys learning from her younger peers and leaders.
No one has quite figured out yet how to add to the 24 hours in a single day, but veteran community activist Faye Wilson Kennedy makes the most of the time she’s been given.
She brokers deals with local restaurants to feed the unhoused and she takes on officials for allowing toxic chemicals to be routed through communities of color. She’s also a lead organizer with Sacramento Poor People’s Campaign; immediate past chair of the Sacramento Area Black Caucus (SABC); co-founder of the Southeast Village Neighborhood Association, a founding member of the Black Parallel School Board; and serves as president of the Colonial Heights Friends of the Library. In her “spare” time, Ms. Kennedy explores her creative side, while preserving Black culture, as part of the local Sisters Quilting Collective. ....

Blacks Boycott Local Women's March — The Sacramento Observer

“We out.” It’s not exactly what the letter says, but that’s the energy coming from several Black leaders and activists who have decided to boycott the Sacramento Women’s March for the “problematic” engagement with Black and Indigenous women.
Leaders sent out a letter late Thursday announcing a departure from participating in the march, held annually in January. The letter is signed by Leia Schenk, founder of EMPACT; Christi Ketchum and Dr. Flojaune Cofer of the Sacramento Sister Circle; Kula Koenig, founder of the Social Justice PolitiCorps for Sacramento County; Sonia Lewis, of Black Justice Sacramento and ASCRIBE Educational Consulting; Venetia James, founder of Hundreds Unit; Mersadez Hogan, former outreach director for the Sacramento Women’s March; student activist Aidan Willett; and Meg White and LaTanya Lyons of Justice Unites Individuals and Communities Everywhere (JUICE). ....

Texas State prepares for COVID-19 vaccine distribution

After nearly a year of devastation brought forth by the COVID-19 pandemic and recent news of Texas becoming the first state to administer 1 million doses of vaccines, Texas State’s Student Health Center is gearing up for its own vaccination efforts with hopes the campus community will take advantage.
Texas State, an approved vaccine provider, created a workgroup during the fall semester to begin planning for distribution and now expects to receive either the Food and Drug Administration-approved Pfizer or Moderna vaccines in the coming weeks.
“We ve seen those horrible pictures of people standing in line for hours and hours to get the vaccine; that is not how we re going to distribute vaccines on our campus,” says Dr. Emilio Carranco, the Student Health Center director. “The Department of State Health Services is going to tell us which priority groups we are to administer the vaccine.” ....
