Rapist dragged woman from bus stop into alleyway and raped her

Vinny Balmer first attacked his victim at her home in June 2019.
Two days later, he met the same woman at a bus stop on New Road, Boldon Colliery, and again physically assaulted her, dragged her into an alleyway and raped her.
After the second assault, the woman immediately reported Balmer, 28, to police and an investigation was launched by our Safeguarding unit.
The man denied the allegations and the case was sent to trial.
A jury at Newcastle Crown Court found him guilty of two counts of rape and he was sentenced to 14 years.
Detective Constable Karen Butterworth led the investigation and has praised the bravery of the victim for coming forward to report these crimes. ....

CMRM seeks wellness co-ordinator to help first responders

CBRM wants to create a mental health plan for first responders(Tom Ayers/CBC)
Cape Breton Regional Municipality is looking to fill a new position that will create a psychological wellness plan for first responders.
The wellness co-ordinator will work with the municipality s operational health and safety team.
The new position came about after the federal government took a look at what the provinces were doing to support first responders.
The province has since started an online initiative, creating a website directed at first responders mental health.
Karen Butterworth, manager of occupational health and safety for CBRM, said the new role is the municipality s response to make sure it is taking care of first responders. ....
