Do people want their pre-pandemic freedom back?

Stay at home orders issued over the past year in response to the pandemic were necessary to protect public health, agreed 62 percent of respondents to a June poll by East Carolina University s Center for Survey Research even after a year of closure orders, resulting economic devastation and social strife, and hypocritical violations of their own rules by politicians. By contrast, only a quarter of respondents said the orders wrongly took away people s personal freedom.
Similar majorities favored face-covering mandates (65.1 percent) and quarantine requirements (67.9 percent) imposed in many states over the past year but also said that wasn t enough. COVID-19 was a problem and not enough was done early on to stop it from getting worse, agreed 62.6 percent of those polled. A dissenting 28.5 percent believed it was a problem, but governments overreacted. ....

North Carolina’s fiscal and economic health, along with years of budgetary discipline and a commitment to economic freedom, bode well for a sustained long-term economic recovery so long as policymakers continue prudent decision making particularly in regard to worker regulations and market restrictions. 
That’s the conclusion of a new report issued by Western Carolina University’s Center for the Study of Free Enterprise and its director, economics professor Dr. Edward J. Lopez.  ....

Protesters say university is exercising a double standard on free speech by absolving employee with alleged white supremacy links

Melanie Flowers had a lot to do this week, and a protest was yet another item on her list. The student body president at N.C. State University was beginning classes, juggling her studies and student government commitments in an ongoing pandemic that makes everything harder.
“There’s … a lot going on,” she said Wednesday evening, before heading into a late student Senate meeting.
Still, she and her student government colleagues organized a protest on campus when the university announced it would take no action against an employee, Chadwick Seagraves, accused of harassing a student online, exposing Black Lives Matters protesters’ personal information on right-wing forums and having ties to the violent Proud Boys organization. ....
