Before and After is a long, slow slog through a story about a family crisis that is largely the fault of the family itself - especially the hot-tempered but loving father, who makes a series of crucial mistakes. It s one of those movies where you want to call out helpful advice to the screen, which would save the characters a lot of trouble. As the movie opens, Carolyn and Ben Ryan (Meryl Streep and Liam Neeson) preside over an idyllic household. Mom is a doctor in their picturesque New England village, Dad is a sculptor, and Jacob and Judith are their happy kids. Then tragedy strikes. A teenage girl is found dead in a field. A season of turnover On Wednesday, Kim Godwin, an executive at CBS News, was named as the next president of ABC News, a rival network. She will replace James Goldston, and be the first Black woman to run a broadcast TV news division. As word of Godwin’s move went around, we also learned that Susan Zirinsky, her boss at CBS, would be stepping down. Zirinsky plans to stay at CBS in a production role, but she will be replaced atop the news division by two new hires Neeraj Khemlani, currently an executive at Hearst Newspapers, and Wendy McMahon, of ABC News. Between them, as the result of an internal restructuring, the two will oversee both news programming and local CBS TV stations. McMahon, who oversaw ABC’s local stations, was reported to have been in contention for the president job there; she and Godwin are now swapping companies. Yewande Komolafe has a fine new recipe for kunun gyada (above) this week, a warmly spiced West African porridge of rice and peanuts that, she pointed out in her article about the dish, is an excellent addition to iftar, the daily breaking of the Ramadan fast that begins next week and runs for a month. For those not fasting during the day, kunun gyada makes for an excellent morning meal. You might top the porridge with fresh fruit or preserves or honey, sprinkle some granulated sugar over it, or mix into it a dollop of sour tamarind or a tablespoon of lemon juice. You could blend it with kefir or a loose yogurt to make a drink. And it stores well in the refrigerator up to a week so I’m thinking you could make a batch and use it in coming evenings for ....
