County to open vaccines to teachers, police, farmworkers


San Mateo County announced Thursday it will open vaccine eligibility to the next phase of residents starting Feb. 22. That includes first responders, food and agriculture workers and teachers and child care providers.
The decision comes after the county had previously said it would stick to vaccinating just residents 65 and older — in addition to health care workers and long-term care residents — because of high death rates among the older population. The county has now reversed that position, and starting Feb. 22, anyone included in the state’s “1B” tier will be eligible to receive a vaccine through their health care provider or federal, state or county vaccine programs. ....

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to award a $20,000 grant to launch a pilot program at San Mateo High School that aims to provide free menstrual products for low-income students.
With the funding, the Period Equity Project, an initiative launched by San Mateo teenager Amanda Safi, could begin as soon as next week at San Mateo High School. The project will provide menstrual products alongside free lunches to students who need them. The money comes from a half-cent sales tax San Mateo County voters passed in 2016 intended to help fund an array of critical services. ....

Festive memory tree in Bourton to support suicide charity | Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard


A PUB Christmas tree is being used to remember loved ones this festive season.
The Kingsbridge on the Riverside in Bourton-on-the-Water has a memory tree which is being used to raise money for Sunflowers Suicide Support.
Village resident Carol Groom came up with the idea in memory of her son Dan.
“The Kingsbridge are supporting us this Christmas,” said Carol.
“They have turned their Christmas tree into a memory sunflower tree.
“People can leave messages on the tree with specially prepared tags in return for a donation.
“Fraiser, my son’s bear, went to see how it was coming along.” ....
