Retiring educators made rural school a home AURORA After 32 years of leading the Airline School, teaching principal Andy Bryan is letting go. So is his wife Beth Bryan, who came to “The Airline” in 1989 as a newly minted special education teacher. Andy tagged along as an ed tech but knew the school, as it knew him, from a stint as a long-term substitute the year before. “I’m an ed tech success story,” Andy laughed. The love they feel for the school shone from both as they recalled the more than three decades spent there. With a pre-K through eighth-grade student population that hovers around 45 students, it is the quintessential small rural school. But the rural Airline School of 1989 isn’t the same as the one in 2021. ....
Read Article FARMINGTON Mt. Blue School District has found leadership in Christian Elkington as the district’s new superintendent. The RSU 9 Board of Directors voted unanimously during their Tuesday meeting to approve Elkington’s contract following an executive session. Elkington is currently superintendent of Maine School Union 76 in Deer Isle. He will succeed interim Superintendent Monique Poulin, who will return to her position as principal of Mt. Blue High School when Elkington begins on July 1. “This is the next right move for me,” Elkington said at the meeting. “I’ve watched from a distance RSU 9 for a number of years. I’ve always been impressed with the different programs and efforts that have been made in Mt. Blue, when it comes to music, when it comes to the arts, when it comes to trying to find the best way to educate kids.” ....
Read Article FARMINGTON Regional School Unit 9 Food Service Director Andrew Hutchins told directors Tuesday night that he anticipates a $120,000 loss for the food nutrition program. “COVID-19 has really been devastating to our financial picture of the school lunch program,” Hutchins said, adding that the program receives funding based on the number of meals served. The food service budget, which consistently breaks even every year, is independent of the district budget. RSU 9 has launched a number of outreach programs to serve students meals during the pandemic. The pickup program serves about 50 to 60 meals every day and the recently launched home delivery service serves about 125 students a day, Hutchins reported. ....
