Urgent need for anti-smoking campaigns to continue after pregnancy

Date Time
Urgent need for anti-smoking campaigns to continue after pregnancy
Curtin University research has found quit support for smoking mothers should continue even after their first babies are born, given that many of those women will become pregnant again, and that quitting can substantially reduce the risk of future preterm births.
The longitudinal study examined the records and histories across 23 years, of 63,540 Australian women with more than one child, who smoked during their first pregnancy.
Lead researcher, Professor Gavin Pereira form Curtin’s School of Population Health said more than one third of women who smoked during pregnancy were able to stop smoking for their next pregnancy. ....

Urgent need for National Disaster Food Relief Strategy

Date Time
Urgent need for National Disaster Food Relief Strategy
Western Australian-developed tools to map the suburbs most affected by food stress and determine what foods should be supplied were key to providing relief for those in need during crises, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic, a Curtin University study has found.
The study found agencies which used two tools- a novel Food Stress Index (FSI) and the Food Basket Recommendations (FBR)- were able to provide emergency food relief more effectively, even during COVID-19 lockdown periods.
Similar to rental stress, the Food Stress Index predicts the likelihood of household food insecurity by geographic location and basic and nutritious Food Basket Recommendations quantify the types and amounts of food required to meet dietary recommendations for the different family types. ....

Our research found that for more than 30 percent of smoking mothers-to-be, quitting for their next pregnancies was achievable, and importantly could reduce the risk of early birth in subsequent pregnancy by as much as 26 per cent, Professor Pereira said. ....

Curtin University researchers have been awarded more than $1.1million from MSWA to conduct vital neurological research, focussing on major outcomes for people living with MS and Alzheimer’s disease.

Study challenges recommended wait time between pregnancies

Date Time
Study challenges recommended wait time between pregnancies
New Curtin University-led research has called into question existing health advice that mothers wait a minimum of two years after giving birth to become pregnant again, in order to reduce the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as preterm and small-for-gestational age births.
The research found that a World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation to wait at least 24 months to conceive after a previous birth may be unnecessarily long for mothers in high-income countries such as Australia, Finland, Norway and the United States.
Lead researcher Dr Gizachew Tessema from the Curtin School of Population Health said because the WHO advice was based on limited evidence from resource-limited countries, it was necessary to investigate whether the 15-year-old recommendation was relevant for higher-income settings. ....
