After reopening in June, the decline in memberships was enough to re-enter negotiations with potential suitors. The Y says it is committed to staying downtown in some form.

The downtown T. Boone Pickens YMCA is back on the market. The well-maintained gym at the corner of Ross and Akard streets is at the edge of plenty of development activity. It’s all marching east along Ross, with the overhaul of the Trammell Crow Center, the new retail-accented parking garage across the street, and Hall Arts’ continued expansion a few blocks north. On the other end of the block is the new Fountain Place Amli, 45 stories of luxury housing. According to JLL, the firm that’s brokering a deal, the post-Klyde Warren Park office boom has brought over 2 million square feet of office development since 2012. ....

Downtown Dallas’ YMCA looking for new home
Longtime building on Ross Avenue is for sale again.

Commercial property brokers are renewing efforts to sell a prime downtown Dallas block.
The YMCA disclosed in 2019 that it was interested in selling its building at Ross Avenue and Akard Street on the north side of downtown.
The almost one-acre T. Boone Pickens YMCA building is across the street from the Fairmont Hotel.
Commercial property firm JLL is marketing the property. JLL’s Michael Swaldi and Jonathan Carrier are hunting a buyer for the 211,000-square-foot building. ....

This year, the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas had to permanently shut down three of its locations and lay off 120 people.
But the community needs only grew as the nonprofit spent much of 2020 helping others through the pandemic by distributing food and nearly 500 computers. Just this week, staff filled up boxes with turkeys, cranberries, corn and other holiday meal essentials. ....

As part of a massive round of charitable giving, MacKenzie Scott, the author, philanthropist, and former wife of Amazon CEO and billionaire Jeff Bezos, has donated $10 million to the YMCA in Dallas.
In a post on Medium, Scott says that she and her advisers have disbursed $4,158,500,000 in gifts to 384 organizations across 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington D.C. over the last four months. Those 384 organizations were culled down from a pool of 6,490 organizations, total. ....

YMCA of Dallas Receives a Surprise Christmas Gift

Scott is recognized as the third wealthiest woman in the world by Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index. She is known for donating her wealth to helping others.
