Wetherspoon bosses confirm The Black Boy pub in Mid Wales will KEEP its 17th-century name

Wetherspoon bosses have confirmed The Black Boy pub in Wales will keep its name - despite activists saying it has racist connotations .
The Black Boy in Newtown, Powys, dates back to the 17th century and was named after chimney sweeps who would emerge from local properties covered in soot.
Pub regulars have also claimed the name came from a nickname given to King Charles II by his mother due to his dark hair and complexion.
Wetherspoon s decision comes after pub chain Greene King announced it would rename two pubs in Suffolk and another in Berkshire all called The Black Boy in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement.   ....

Probe is launched to find out if Hammersmith and Fulham council's coat of arms is racist

A coat of arms featuring a black sailing ship could be changed if a probe discovers it depicts a slave vessel, a council has revealed.
Hammersmith and Fulham council s coat of arms depicts the arrival of Vikings in the borough in 879AD - but some fear it could actually represent a slave ship.
And those behind the probe suggested a horseshoe symbol on the coat of arms could have links to a 17th-century slave trader who lived locally, the Sun reported.
The Labour-run authority in West London will have all statues, plaques, monuments and street names within its boundary examined by experts for traces of anything seen to celebrate Britain s connections to the slave trade. ....

What will Greene King's renamed pubs be called?

More than 7,000 pubgoers have voted for new names at four Greene King pubs which had ‘racist connotations’.
Greene King asked communities to rename the pubs via an online poll and stated the decision to change the names is part of its inclusion and diversity strategy in a bid to champion equality and diversity within the firm alongside further supporting people from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds.
The 3,100-strong group said the name change followed detailed consultations with a range of stakeholders and thorough research of the pubs’ histories.
The Black Boy in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk received 3,540 votes with almost three quarters (73%) choosing the West Gate. ....
