In recent days, Gov. Phil Murphy and acting Commissioner Angelica Allen-McMillan announced a comprehensive plan called “The Road Forward,” an initiative intended to mitigate challenges for students, educators and school districts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. At the centerpiece of this plan, the state is disbursing about $1.2 billion in new federal stimulus resources to districts to address learning gaps. This is a significant infusion of funding that can be used in impactful ways to substantially help students. It is imperative that the state not only provide meaningful guidance on the best and most effective ways to deploy these funds but also be committed to supporting ongoing measurement of student academic progress. ....

NJ Reveals Plan to Address Learning Gap, Mental Health Impact of Pandemic on Students


Second, we are releasing two substantial tranches of funding on March 15. In one tranche, the department will establish a pair of grant opportunities totaling $105 million to aid districts in providing additional academic and mental health supports, Allen-McMillan said.
The acting commissioner for the state s Department of Education went on to explain that the Learning Acceleration Grant, consisting of $75 million, is dedicated to providing academic support, including research-based academic enrichment activities in STEM, literacy, and the arts, such as summer learning academies and one-on-one tutoring.
This grant will reinforce the broader learning ecosystem by funding student efficacy support, professional development, for educators’ formative assessments and programs to engage parents and caregivers through a multi-tiered system of supports, Allen-McMillan said, adding that the grant aims to help lower income districts, although all districts will be eligible. NJ schools to get $1.2 billion, assessments may be canceled


New Jersey plans to funnel $1.2 billion to mostly low-income school districts and for mental health programs, Gov. Phil Murphy said Friday. His administration will also seek a federal waiver for statewide assessments this spring. 
The use of federal coronavirus relief funds should help give school communities flexibility and support, Murphy said, to best meet the individual needs of their students during this challenging time.
