Hydra and the flame of the Revolution, an online seminar by Alexander Billinis

Alexander Billinis from the Clemson University (USA) will present an online lecture entitled “Hydra and the Flame of the Revolution”, on Thursday 3 June, at 7 pm, at the Greek Centre, as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.
The island of Hydra, a largely barren (yet strikingly beautiful) stone massif rising from the Saronic Gulf, became one of the most important centers of the Greek War of Independence. Sparsely inhabited in 1600, waves of refugees sought solace on the rock, and the need for sustenance and agency drove the Hydriots like Greeks over the millennia to the sea.

Pontian Genocide memorial seminar

4 May 2021 1:56pm
In a joint event, the Pontiaki Estia and the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCOMV) are teaming up to present a lecture entitled Pontian Genocide Memorial Seminar: William Lloyd and the Liberation of Pontus.
Dean Kalimniou will present the seminar on Thursday 13 May, at 7:00pm, at the Greek Centre as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered by the GCOMV.
While there was little pre-War engagement with Pontus in Australia, one man, William Lloyd, did his utmost to draw attention to the plight of the Greeks of Pontus and call for their independence. His story is as fascinating as is the process of verifying the astonishing events that colour it.

Battle of Crete veterans that played AFL

This is a hybrid seminar, can also be followed on Facebook and Youtube.
Over 2500 AFL/VFL players served from 1897 until the end of National Service in 1972. Of these men, 22 players from various VFL/AFL football clubs served in Greece and Crete during WW2 and sadly five of those players died on active service. Three in Greece or Crete and the other two in New Guinea and Australia.
This tribute to all who served in Greece and Crete on the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Crete explores their football careers, their service to Australia and as brave men who were loved sons, brothers, fathers and mates. They came from all walks of life and represented Australian sport and service to their country.
