J. Ray Kennedy: Election bind not quite so tight

J. Ray Kennedy | Other Voices
I write in response to Terry McAteer’s April 27 guest column, “California faces election nightmare.“ This response is my own and not an official response from the full California Citizens Redistricting Commission.
Thanks to the Legislature and a number of civic groups, California isn’t in quite the bind that people might imagine, and certainly in much better shape than the many other states that are still seeking a solution to the delay in the release of redistricting data.
The California Supreme Court ruled on July 17, 2020, in Legislature v. Padilla that the Aug. 15 deadline in the state Constitution should be extended to ensure that the California Citizens Redistricting Commission has the time necessary to draw the new maps. ....

2020 California Citizens Redistricting Commission hires Anthony Pane as Chief Counsel

This week, the 2020 California Citizens Redistricting Commission (Commission) announced the hiring of Anthony Pane as Chief Counsel. Mr. Pane joins the Commission from the California Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA), where he managed the day-to-day activities of attorneys and advised Board/Bureaus on Bagley-Keene requirements among other things.
“The Commission is fortunate to have Mr. Pane join our team,” stated Chair Alicia Fernández. “He brings a wealth of experience working for state agencies and advising on Bagley-Keene Open Meeting Act adherence, the state law that ensures the Commission functions in a transparent manner. He will also advise the Commission on state and federal laws governing the redistricting process.” ....

California's redistricting commission wants to hear from you

By Alicia Fernández, Special to CalMatters
Alicia Fernández is chair of the California Citizens Redistricting Commission, Commission@wedrawthelinesca.org.
Because “We the People” should select our representatives and not the other way around, the independent California Citizens Redistricting Commission was established in 2008 by citizen initiative.
For the redistricting commission to draft fair and representative congressional, state Senate, state Assembly and Board of Equalization district maps, we need communities to tell us about themselves. We also need Census 2020 data, including the number of congressional districts allocated to California.
Due to delays in receiving data from the U.S. Census, communities of interest will have more time to identify where they are located, how they are connected and why it is crucial to be represented in the same district. ....

Editorial: California's independent redistricting commission is dangerously close to failing its basic task

Print
California’s Citizens Redistricting Commission has one task, and one only: to take census data gathered every decade and draw new boundaries for state, legislative and congressional districts through a public and transparent process that’s free from political manipulation.
Simple, right? But have the 14 commissioners doing the latest round of map-making fully grasped this awesome responsibility? It’s not looking good, and that’s a problem not just for the commission, but for the future of democracy.
Charles T. Munger Jr., a Republican donor and one of the chief proponents of the proposition that created the commission, has accused commissioners of violating state law by meeting privately and routinely with tech companies, legislative representatives and others without giving the required public notice or releasing transcripts or recordings of those meetings. In a letter sent to the commission May 7, he cites several examples of commissioners mentionin ....
