The nation’s most populous state appears to be backsliding on its goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
A new report by the nonprofit and nonpartisan group Next 10 found that California emissions increased slightly in 2018, compared to 2017, the first increase since 2012, making it all the more difficult for the state to reach its 2030 emissions reduction goals. ....

Next 10 report finds California must increase GHG reductions to 4.9%/year through 2030 to meet target
California’s progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions has temporarily reversed, with pollution upticks signaling an increasingly difficult path ahead in achieving the state’s 2030 and 2050 climate targets, according to the 12
th annual California Green Innovation Index released by the nonpartisan nonprofit Next 10 and prepared by Beacon Economics.
This year’s Index finds that 2018 greenhouse gas emissions the latest year for which data are available rose overall for the first time since 2012, driven in part by increases in the power and commercial sectors. Data from the report illustrate that California now must reduce emissions by an average of 4.9% each year from 2020 to 2030 to cut emissions to 40% below 1990 levels by 2030, as mandated by SB 32. ....

After five consecutive years of decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, California saw an increase in its planet-warming pollution. That’s according to a new report from the nonprofit Next 10 and research firm Beacon Economics.

The analysis shows that California could get back on track with climate policy by investing in a green stimulus. It also contains important lessons for national climate policymakers, including the fact that unfettered growth in the commercial real estate industry is incompatible with meeting climate targets. ....
