LBUSD board approves raise for teachers, adminstrators • Long Beach Post News

The new contracts have already been approved by the Teachers Association of Long Beach, the union that represents instructors.
Steven Rockenbach, the LBUSD’s director of employee relations, said the district’s administrative and management teams will receive a commensurate package as well.
“Traditionally when we approve our compensation package for TALB is when we offer the same package to our non-represented and management teams,” he said. “They’ll be receiving a similar compensation package.”
This week’s deal signals a remarkable turnaround for the city’s largest employer and largest workforce, which a year ago was bracing for the possibility of mass layoffs as the state’s economy was in disarray due to the coronavirus pandemic. ....

The Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District board held their regular meeting on April 20. It was a hybrid meeting. The board and staff were in-person at the Technology Middle School Library while the public was still online via the district’s YouTube channel. Before and after the open session, the board met in closed session. This was to discuss the performance evaluation of a public employee – specifically that of Dr. Mayra Perez, the Superintendent. 
Public comments continued to be critical of Perez, the board, the teachers’ unions, and the pace of reopening schools for in-person instruction. While some praised her leadership, many saw her as moving too slowly to reopen schools given the changing guidelines from the state and county. Some thought her delays in action “combined with what appears to be more concern for teachers’ unions than our students” showed poor leadership of the district. April Garcia urged ....

As students gradually return to classrooms, advocates and lawmakers say it’s more important than ever to provide free meals in schools without burdensome eligibility requirements, just as California has done during the pandemic.
The “Free School Meals For All” bill, SB 364, introduced last month by East Bay Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, would establish a statewide Universal Meal Plan starting in the 2022-2023 school year.
