HCPS summer school learning expanded, more hands-on this year
Henderson County Public Schools summer school program begins June 9 and it s chock-full of hands-on activities for elementary and middle schoolers.
State legislation requires at least one enrichment activity as well as physical activity during either 150 hours, or 30 days, of in-person summer learning. Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services Wendy Frye said HCPS, along with community partners, will offer dozens of activities that go beyond textbooks and in-class learning during its six-week program.
The program will be held Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will get a week off July 5-9 and instruction will wrap up on July 22. Meals and transportation will be provided. ....

Residents invited to help paint Bee Mural in downtown Hendersonville

Like a paint-by-number template, the ground-level sections of the Bee Mural downtown will be outlined and ready for residents to come out and help paint. Ages 5 and up can add their own touch to the mural.
Artist Matt Willey has been painting honey drips, chrysalises and a butterfly on the mural being created on the exterior wall of Hands On! Children’s Museum in the Azalea parking lot on Third Avenue East between North Main Street and King Street in downtown Hendersonville.
On Saturday, May 1, the community is invited to join him and make a personal mark by painting a petal or two on the mural, organizers said in a news release. ....

Henderson County News: Community can help paint bee mural on May 1

Painters age 5 and up can add their own touch to the mural in the paint-by-number-like project.
Artist Matt Willey has recently painted honey drips, chrysalises and a butterfly on the mural on the exterior wall of Hands On! Children’s Museum, facing the Azalea parking lot on Third Avenue East between North Main Street and King Street downtown.
There is no charge to participate. However, pre-registration is required to limit group size according to CDC guidelines. Masks and social distancing are also required. Reservation time slots are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis 10 to 11 a.m.; 11 a.m. to noon; and 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Registration will close once all spaces have been reserved or by 8 p.m. Friday, April 30. Residents and visitors will want to circle May 8 on their calendars as the opening date for the Hendersonville Farmers Market at the Historic Train Depot in the Seventh Avenue District.
Approximately 45 vendors are prepared to sell local food products including eggs, herbs, produce, plants, baked goods, coffee, meat, honey and more.
In honor of Mother’s Day weekend, vendors will also have special offerings with mom in mind, such as fresh cut flowers, eco-friendly bath and body products, unique greeting cards, jewelry and handwoven baskets. ....
