Q&A: Artist KT Taylor on Building Community Connection for Rural Queers

Not Alone, Never Was
about a month into quarantine. An unexpected result [of lockdown] for me was feeling a deep and sudden sense of disconnect from the queer community. I was living in Minneapolis, a place I moved to in part because of the queer community, and suddenly found myself unable to go to workshops, gay bars, poetry nights, art exhibits—all the places where I found queer community and connection. During this time I couldn’t help but think back to the isolation and loneliness I felt living in Idaho as a queer youth. This feeling felt so familiar, and I knew if I was experiencing it in a city, then my siblings in rural spaces were no doubt feeling it doubly. I have always been inspired by the history of zines as radical educational tools and tools of connection for oppressed communities, and I felt like this was the perfect time to utilize my passion, artistry, and personal experiences. The feedback on the project has been nothing short of breathtaking. I ended up sending out over 100 copies of the zine to folks who requested it all over the country, and two copies were even sent abroad. I received so many messages expressing how necessary this work was and how important it was to people. I still can’t believe so many people could be impacted by something I created, but that’s part of why I love being an artist. The feedback has also been so positive that I am working on

MILAN
.-kaufmann repetto announces a solo exhibition of artist Corita Kent (b. 1918, Fort Dodge, d. 1986, Boston). Developed in collaboration with the Corita Art Center in Los Angeles, to the everyday miracle presents a retrospective view of Kent's work, bringing together over 40 prints and watercolors as well as a selection of archival materials spanning from the early 1950s until her death in 1986.
Corita Kent was an artist, educator, and advocate for social justice whose work reflects the ascendancy of Pop Art, the spiritual renewal of the Second Vatican Council and the political activism of the 1960s. A catholic nun for more than three decades, Kent was deeply committed to cultural, social, and aesthetic innovation. Her idiosyncratic approach to art and outspoken engagement with the world made her a target of criticism by conservative clergy but also secluded the reception of her work from more elite contemporary art circles. Born Frances Elizabeth Kent, she entered the religious order Immaculate Heart of Mary in Hollywood at age 18, taking the name Sister Mary Corita. By 1947, she began teaching art at the Immaculate Heart College and later became head of the art department in 1964. During this time, the art department became a well-known hub of creativity and liberal thinking.

COVID has taken so many things from so many people, most notably loved ones and precious time with people we wish we could see again. It’s taken graduation ceremonies and celebrations. It’s taken lunch dates and anniversary dates. It’s taken in-person classes and at-home comfort. It’s taken sanctuary and peace of mind from students, teachers, parents and community members.
Incoming freshmen in college choose between taking classes in person and risking infection or taking classes online and risking isolation. This balance between online and in person is something that one group at Michigan Technological University has been working hard to combat.

Every year on the third Monday of January, we celebrate the life, work, and sacrifice of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is widely known that Dr. King fought for a day when America would be a country of equals—when we would be judged by our merits, no matter the color of our skin, the religion we profess, or the place we were born.
The power of Dr. King’s words and the beauty of his dream are often the focus on this day. The phrase “I have a dream” is recognized by millions of Americans. Because Dr. King was one of the great orators of the 20th century, there is a tendency to focus on his inspirational quotes and powerful messages. But if we are truly to honor his legacy, particularly in these tumultuous times, we must go further. We are called to act. We must live the teachings of Martin Luther King, Jr.
