PLACE 6
Newly elected Place 6 board member Cullen Mills, 37, of Killeen, will effectively replace retired longtime board member Minerva Trujillo, after he solidified his win Saturday night. Mills beat opponent Riakos âRockâ Adams by 425 votes.
Mills, a 2002 Harker Heights High School graduate, is the husband of KISD employee, parent educator, Erin Mills, and owner of family business Modern Appliance in Killeen. Mills graduated from University of North Texas with a degree in business administration. Mills will join the other six board members at the upcoming May 11th board meeting.
A total of 2,018 voters cast their ballots in favor of Mills, while 1,593 voted for his opponent Riakos Adams.
The Killeen Independent School District school board will have at least one new face, and maybe two, after the votes are tallied in Saturdayâs school board election.
In advance of Saturdayâs election, the four school board candidates are wrapping up their final campaign push for votes.
Candidates Riakos âRockâ Adams and Cullen Mills are facing off for the retiring school board member Minerva Trujilloâs Place 6 seat. Incumbent board president JoAnn Purser is defending the Place 7 seat against challenger Lan Carter.
PLACE 7
In talking with the Herald Thursday, three-term incumbent JoAnn Purser said she is getting ready to revamp some of her campaign signage in the last 24 hours of the campaign.
The Killeen Independent School board of trustees holds the ultimate decision-making authority for a district charged with educating some 45,000 students, many of whom are military affiliated.
In two short weeks, the school board could find itself with two new voices of influence if voters show up to the polls in the upcoming May 1 election.
Four people are running for two seats on the KISD board of trustees. Lan Carter is running against incumbent board President JoAnn Purser for the Place 7 school board seat. Riakos âRockâ Adams is taking on Cullen Mills for the Place 6 seat, currently held by board member Minerva Trujillo, who is not running for reelection.
The family of longtime Killeen ISD bus driver William âBillâ Jones spoke to the Herald about their concerns with the districtâs transportation department, Jonesâ speedy firing, and the lack of communication theyâve had with the district since Jonesâ death.
Jones, 75, was found dead at Cedar Gap Park in Harker Heights last fall from a gunshot wound to the chest less than 24 hours after he was fired from KISD following an accident involving a child and a Ford F-150 on the first day of in-person school.
