As Neilson Library prepares to fully re-open to the campus community and the general public this fall, staff are also preparing to welcome some very special guests.
The portraits of Smith’s former presidents long housed near the main staircase in College Hall will be moved to a place of prominence in the new Neilson later this summer.
President Kathleen McCartney says that the 10 portraits will be installed in the newly named Klingenstein Browsing Room the beloved first-floor gathering space formerly known simply as the Browsing Room.
“Smith is richly informed by our history, and the portraits are a part of our history,” McCartney notes. “There are two reasons to display them in Neilson Library. The first is practical, in that we have run out of space in College Hall. More importantly, the portraits will be mo ....

2 law firms exploring civil suits in Wayne Hankey assault allegations

Two Halifax law firms are exploring the possibility of filing a civil lawsuit related to claims of sexual assault against former university professor Wayne Hankey.
McKiggan Hebert and Wagners Law Firm are both working with people who have come forward as possible complainants.
Hankey, 76, who taught at both the University of King s College and Dalhousie University for decades, is already facing three criminal charges.
Two are sexual assault charges one in connection with an incident that occurred on the King s campus in 1988 and another that dates back to 1982 and the third is an indecent assault charge related to multiple incidents that took place between 1977 and 1979. ....

After Years At A Mid-Michigan College, A Mayan Artifact Returns To Its Homeland

It began eight years ago, in 2013, when Arizona State University archaeologist Joel Palka visited Albion College.
He was there to study one of the college’s photograph collections of the Mayan people who inhabited what is today known as the state of Chiapas in the southwest region of Mexico.
Walking through the halls, he saw an ancient urn featuring sculptural details of what appears to be a man wearing colorful garments.
“I passed by the urn on my way to the photograph archive. And I always thought, ‘Oh, it s an, it s an interesting urn.’ And it was made out of ceramic about three feet high,” he said.  ....
