COVID-19 pushed more students into food and housing insecurity, Temple report says


More than a quarter of students skipped meals or cut their meal sizes at least once within a 30 day period, the report said. Also, housing insecurity rose 10% in 2020, with many students admitting that they couldn t afford to pay rent and utilities.
The recession immediately following the pandemic struck U.S. employment particularly hard, and college students were just as negatively affected. More than one in three lost their job due to COVID-19, and a quarter worked less or for less money.
I was doing pretty well just a year ago. Now . I spend every day looking for work, worrying about food and rent, (and) how to pay even a little to keep attending school – because I’m sunk if I don’t, and getting calls from collection agencies, even a lawsuit from a credit card company. It’s hard to focus on school, an anonymous student in Hawaii quoted in the report said. ....

Carl Pierre will spend his final college basketball season at Rice, the UMass senior announced on Twitter and Instagram on Thursday.
The Boston native spent four years as a Minuteman and was a captain for the past two. He’s UMass’ second-leading 3-point maker all time (286). Pierre announced his intent to enter the transfer portal March 17. Though Pierre was a senior last year and played four years at UMass, he has an additional year of eligibility due to a COVID-19 exemption. ....

As Covid spreads, Surat shuts public gardens, zoo | Surat News


Surat: In wake of the rising number of coronavirus cases in the city the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has decided to impose a slew of curbs like closing down of all public gardens and cutting down on public transport until the situation improves. As many as 300 public transport buses will be taken off the city roads, said an SMC official.
The civic body also closed the Sarthana Nature Park and Zoo for public till further orders in view of the surge in Covid-19 cases in the city.
On Tuesday, after detailed deliberations, the SMC decided to close all public gardens till further notice. The gardens run by the civic body had reopened for the public a few months ago after remaining shut for almost eight months due to Covid-19 imposed lockdown. ....
