Local school superintendents say this was one of the biggest takeaways from the pandemic year and one of the lessons they will carry forward.
“We have learned so much,” Lewiston Public Schools Superintendent Jake Langlais said. Probably the most valuable was the importance of face-to-face teaching and learning, he said.
“The dynamics of school that include routine, social interaction, nutrition, physical activity, nurses, guidance, student activities, parent/family connections, transportation, and so much more, have levels of fulfillment that cannot be satisfied looking at a computer screen,” Langlais said. ....

Nutrition programs to feed children through summer food service program

AUGUSTA With the assistance of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Maine public schools have long offered a nutritious breakfast and lunch meal program to thousands of children in Maine during the school year.
During the pandemic, many flexibilities were put into place to ensure children had access to complementary meals while learning remotely from home or attending school in person, according to a news release.
“We applaud those who worked tirelessly to provide food to children during a challenging school year,” a news release from the Maine Department of Education read. “With summer right around the corner, that important service will continue in many areas of Maine. The Summer Food Service Program, a program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, operates at hundreds of sites across Maine to ensure children get the nutrition they need.” ....

Continuing his goal of ending childhood obesity, fitness icon Jake “Body by Jake” Steinfeld, chairman of the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils, has kicked off the year by selecting the State of Maine for its 2021 DON’T QUIT! Campaign. The foundation will deliver a state-of-the-art DON’T QUIT! Fitness Center to three elementary or middle schools. School nominations will be accepted until Friday, March 19. Maine expands school-based COVID-19 testing to support in-person learning

AUGUSTA The Maine Department of Health and Human Services and the Maine Department of Education announced Tuesday new COVID-19 testing options to support schools in Maine, strengthening Maine’s strategy that has effectively limited virus transmission in school settings.
The Departments announced the State has purchased 250,000 BinaxNOW rapid antigen tests and will prioritize these tests for schools, along with health care and long-term care sites, to expand regular testing in schools and support in-person learning.
The tests are expected to arrive over the next three months and come in addition to 25,000 BinaxNOW tests that remain from the State’s initial 2020 Federal distribution, according to a news release. ....

Governor Janet Mills and the Maine Department of Education announced Monday, Feb. 2, that the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils (NFGFC) has selected Maine as part of its 2021 DON’T QUIT! Campaign, a national effort to encourage physical fitness in youth. As part of the campaign, the NFGFC, which seeks to encourage and reward innovation in the field of youth fitness, will gift DON’T QUIT!
