LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Teachers and school staff are now eligible in Louisiana to get a COVID-19 vaccination, as the faculty at Lake Charles College Prep Charter School received their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine Wednesday morning.
“Having the staff receive their vaccine will help keep a lot of us in the classrooms,” said GeMar Braxton, the school nurse at LCCP.
Braxton organized the vaccination event by partnering with Boudreaux’s pharmacy. ....

Middletown educators team up for porch visits for students who are struggling with remote learning


They’re keeping tabs on students who are struggling with remote learning.
It’s all about intervention and it’s paying off.
An army of Blue Dragon educators huddled at Middletown High School on Wednesday.
“We know that students who are successful their freshman year are more likely to graduate on time,” said Assistant Principal Dawn Brookes, Middletown High School.
The Connecticut RISE Network, a non-profit supporting education, also knows this. It recently published a report on hybrid and remote learning in our state.
“So, what the researched revealed is that students who have chosen to be remote are more likely to be disengaged than their peers who have chosen to either be hybrid or in-person,” said Nichelle Woodson, CT RISE Network. ....

BOONE COUNTY — Black doctors, nurses and health educators will lead a forum Wednesday night on COVID-19 vaccines, specifically for the Black community in Boone County.

Let s Talk: COVID Vaccines and the Black Community virtually. 
Sara Humms, community relations specialist for the Columbia/ Boone County PHHS, said the goal of the forum is to connect. 
Our goal is to listen and to answer questions, Humm said. Learn about some barriers people are facing so we can try to work on breaking those barriers down and then also just provide information that folks need to make a decision on if they want to get the vaccine ....

Dodong Gullas, Cebuano arts patron, educator and newspaperman, dies

JOSE “Dodong” Gullas, a champion of Cebuano arts and music, educator and journalist, died in a hospital in Cebu City at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021.
He was 87. His death was first reported by The Freeman on its Facebook page.
In his January 2019 The Freeman column, lawyer Josephus Jimenez paid tribute to Gullas: “Sir Dodong is one very low-key, unassuming leader who talks less and achieves more, who runs UV, leads The Freeman, promotes arts and music, especially Cebuano music, and also remains an unassuming pillar of lay faithful’s support to the Catholic Church.”
Jose Gullas was the chairman of the board of trustees of The Freeman and executive vice president of the University of the Visayas at the time of his death. ....
