When the Chinese mainland started to tighten curbs on solid waste imports in 2017, Hong Kong s recycling business was thrown into a quandary as Hong Kong exporters cut waste paper prices down by more than a half, and some even stopped collections. ....

From actress Emma Watson to designer Stella McCartney, activists in the fashion community have been saying for years that the clothing industry has dire environmental consequences.
The average American will throw away around 81 pounds of clothing every year, most of which is not recycled, according to 2014 estimates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. One of the ways consumers are responding to these jarring statistics is by making the shift from buying new clothes to buying used items, otherwise known as secondhand shopping.
University of Georgia students practice secondhand shopping in a myriad of ways. A quick Facebook search will reveal groups like UGA Clothing Exchange and Athens Purchase Nothing Group — two forums that allow participants to resell or trade their old clothing. Athens is also host to many local thrift stores, like Dynamite Clothing and the Project Safe thrift store. ....

Piling garbage, dwindling staff: GMC woes keep mounting | Guwahati News


GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) is struggling with twin problems rise in daily waste output and a severe manpower crunch.
As per the latest data, waste produced in the city home to about 10 lakh people is almost 450 tonnes a day. More than 50% of cleaners’ posts are vacant. “The sanctioned posts for cleaners are 1,440, while the current number if just about 600. So, over 800 posts are vacant. To cover a city like Guwahati with this kind of manpower is heavily challenging,” a senior GMC official said.
Ninety NGOs, which have been given contracts by the GMC, collect garbage from door-to-door and dump it at the Boragaon dumping site, while regular employees clean roads and public places. ....

Metro to purchase property in Cornelius for proposed transfer station

Metro will pay $3.1 million for a 12.5-acre property in Cornelius, where it proposes building a solid waste facility.
Metro took a major step Thursday, Feb. 4 toward building a new recycling and solid waste transfer station in Cornelius.
The Metro Council unanimously approved a resolution allowing the regional government to purchase a 12.5-acre industrial lot at North Fourth Avenue and Holladay Street, several blocks north of the Cornelius Walmart, where the station would be constructed.
In 2019, Metro created an agreement for the property, providing officials time to assess the suitability of the property for the project and engage with the community about concerns and potential benefits before purchasing it. ....
