Honey bees in Nebraska have been dropping dead due to an ethanol plant that generates enormous heaps of smelly waste containing unsafe levels of pesticides.
AltEn, a recycling plant based in the town of Mead, has been using pesticide-coated grains to produce ethanol, a chemical used to make biofuel. As a result, the company has been churning out massive piles of toxic byproducts that end up in farm fields or are left rotting on factory grounds.

Floating islands of rubbish pollute Bulgaria's rivers

Bulgarian authorities were left clearing up after heavy rains and floods struck several towns in the west of the country.
Strong currents and rising water levels on the river Iskar carried away large amounts of municipal waste.
Most of the 40cm deep layer of rubbish that has been piling up in the north-western city of Svoge washed in from the capital Sofia, around 40 km away.
A hydroelectric dam is the first obstacle in the way before objects reach the Danube River up north and the rubbish mass there is currently about the size of a football pitch.
Some in the city have attributed the pile-up to people using the river as a dump. Municipal employees were allegedly caught disposing of a truckload of rubbish on a riverbank last summer, a claim which the deputy mayor of Svog denies. ....

I was interested to read Tony Fellingham s letter on January 12 where he argues a waste collection system like that used in Calgary, Canada would be more appropriate for Tauranga than the system
proposed by Tauranga City Council.
Calgary does have a well-run waste system that sees it ranked as one of the world s cleanest cities.
But it seems things have changed since Tony lived there. Calgary now runs a waste collection system virtually identical to that proposed by Tauranga City Council. ....

Trash by the Ton Cleared Off Remote Hawaiian Beaches

KAUNAKAKAI, Moloka’i, Hawaii, January 13, 2021 (ENS) – In the Hawaiian Islands, the past year was plagued with travel and gathering limitations due to COVID-19, yet The Nature Conservancy’s Hawaii Chapter and partners were able to remove more than 46,000 pounds of marine debris from Moloka’i’s remote beaches in the last quarter of 2020 alone.

On the island of Moloka’i, smallest and most remote of the main Hawaiian islands, The Nature Conservancy Hawaii’s Mo‘omomi Preserve and its adjoining beaches are home to rich coastal marine life, culturally-important fishing grounds on which local families rely, and some of Hawaii’s most important nesting habitat for endangered green sea turtles. ....
