RICHLAND, Washington, January 12, 2021 (ENS) – The U.S. Department of Energy is poised to complete a cleanup commitment that has been decades in the making – immobilizing in glass the least radioactive portion of the tank waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in south central Washington State.
For more than 40 years, nuclear reactors at Hanford produced plutonium for America’s defense program. Beginning in 1943, the site was used to produce plutonium for the bomb that brought an end to World War II. Production was ramped up again in 1947 to meet the challenges of the Cold War and continued until 1987 when the last reactor stopped operation. ....

UK 'may use European Union exit to ramp up exports of plastic waste'

Environmental groups have accused the United Kingdom of backtracking on earlier promises not to export dirty plastic waste to developing nations.
They say the UK s exit from the European Union, which was completed on Jan 1, opened the door to it stepping away from the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal.
The convention was amended on the very day the UK left the bloc to outlaw exports of dirty and unsorted plastic waste to 187 developing nations.
The EU has pledged to follow the convention. ....

Greater Noida societies to show waste disposal skills | Noida News

GREATER NOIDA: More than 50 group housing societies will showcase their waste management skills before the local development authorities. According to officials of the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA), a total of 52 entries have been registered for the society ranking competition that is scheduled this month.
The Authority will dole out cash reward of Rs 2 lakh to the winning society, Rs 1.50 lakh to the first runner-up and Rs 1 lakh to the one which bags the third position.
“Organised for the bulk waste generators in the region, the model being followed by the best society will be circulated among other societies in the town,” an official said. ....
