Non-Public Schools Can Apply To Access Federal Emergency Funds

The Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) today notified the state s non-public schools that they can begin applying for funding through the federal Emergency Assistance for Non-Public Schools (EANS) program, which is part of the Governor s Emergency Education Relief (GEER II) Fund. CSDE is contracting with the State Education Resource Center (SERC) to administer the application process for the $15.8 million in EANS aid including the procurement of eligible items and services under the control and supervision of CSDE.
Under the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations (CRRSA) Act, CSDE must prioritize EANS services or assistance to non-public schools that enroll low-income students and those most impacted by COVID-19. CSDE may consider other factors including whether schools received funding under ESSER I through the equitable services provision. Second Round of Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER II) Funds to Address Challenges Exacerbated by Pandemic 
TRENTON – Today, Governor Phil Murphy and Secretary of Higher Education Dr. Brian Bridges announced that $29.5 million in federal funding will be available to New Jersey’s institutions of higher education amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic to support the goals of the State Plan for Higher Education through a competitive challenge grant and address student food insecurities across college campuses.

Even as the Biden administration has begun pushing for the next recovery package, educators are still sorting out the details of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, otherwise known as CARES Act 2. The $900 billion relief package passed by Congress on Dec. 21, 2020 and signed into law on Dec. 27, dedicated $82 billion for education. While the funding covered the same three buckets of money set aside in the CARES Act legislation signed into law in March 2020, specifics vary slightly. Act 2 provides:
$54.3 billion for K-12, under the Elementary School Emergency Relief (ESSER II) Fund;
$22.7 billion for colleges and universities, under the Higher Education Emergency Relief (HEER II) fund; ....
