After more than eight years as a commissioned reserve deputy with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, reserve unit commander Bob Christian is preparing to turn in his department-issued uniform. But not because he’s quitting the unit.
Clark County Sheriff Chuck Atkins sent a memo on May 3 to his corps of 14 volunteer reserve deputies informing them that he was ending the program that has supplemented the department since 1952. ....

A Clark County judge apparently didn’t realize his courtroom conversation was live on YouTube as he referred to a young man killed last fall by sheriff’s deputies as “the Black guy they are trying to make an angel out of” and called him “dumb” for supposedly thinking he would go to prison for a relatively small drug bust. ....

A Clark County judge apparently didn’t realize his courtroom conversation was live on YouTube as he referred to young man killed last fall by sheriff’s deputies as “the Black guy they are trying to make an angel out of” and called him “dumb” for supposedly thinking he would go to prison for a relatively small drug bust.
District Court Judge Darvin Zimmerman, 70, also said Kevin Peterson Jr. “had a death wish” as well as disparaging Peterson’s father and defending his own son, a deputy who was on the drug task force trying to arrest Peterson. ....

Representatives of communities of color in Clark County said the non-law enforcement members of the Southwest Washington Independent Investigative Response Team do not go far enough in increasing the transparency following police shootings, or in reversing systemic racism.
NAACP Vancouver can help in spreading the word about something like the non-law enforcement members, but it’s important to acknowledge the potential barriers for some of the “would-be” participants, said Legal Redress Committee Chair Nickeia Hunter. ....
