County receives $4.4 million in American Rescue Plan funding

BEDFORD Lawrence County has received its first disbursement of the American Rescue Plan funding, to the tune of more than $4.4 million, commissioners said during Tuesday morning s meeting.
The money will be held, while the county receives guidance from the Baker Tilly firm on how they can legally use the funds, given the heavy restrictions placed on them.
Other business discussed included Jason Lewis, chief of the Marshall Township Volunteer Fire Department, receiving approval from commissioners to apply for a public facilities grant that would be used for a new Marshall Township fire station. Lewis said the department has outgrown its current facility. ....

More traffic in area near plant expansion cited as reason for lowering speed to 35 mph

BEDFORD As more and more heavy trucks and large deliveries travel into Mitchell for the Lehigh Cement Co. multi-million dollar expansion project, traffic safety is a concern.
Troy Lobosky, Lehigh site security manager, spoke to the Lawrence County Commissioners Tuesday at the courthouse to request a lower speed limit on Mill Creek Road.
He recommended the limit be dropped to 35 mph for a one-mile stretch of Mill Creek Road between Meridian Road and Ball Road.
The road currently has no speed limit signage, which means motorists can travel at 55 mph.
Lehigh is in the midst of a $600-million expansion project that will literally change the entire landscape of the Lehigh operation in Mitchell. ....

INDIANAPOLIS – Legislators are weighing whether to allow more overweight truckloads on Indiana s roads – a move opposed by police for safety reasons and the rail industry for competitive purposes.
A Senate transportation panel heard testimony on House Bill 1190 on Tuesday but didn t vote.
Rep. Jim Pressel, R-Rolling Prairie, said Indiana already allows a limited number of overweight trip permits for steel, agriculture and paper products.
This bill expands the commodities that can use overweight trucks up to 120,000 pounds and largely eliminates the cap.
Indiana law currently limits loads to 80,000 pounds without the special permit. ....

State lawmakers debate whether to increase weight limits for trucks

Indiana lawmakers are debating whether to allow more trucks that are now considered overweight to travel on state roadways.
House Bill 1190, authored by Rep. Jim Pressel, R-Rolling Prairie, would increase the maximum weight for trucks from 80,000 pounds to 120,000 pounds. Current state law only allows trucks to be up to 120,000 pounds if they are hauling certain commodities, including metal, paper or agricultural materials.
The Senate Homeland Security and Transportation Committee discussed the bill on Tuesday but did not vote on it.
Manufacturers and trucking groups are supportive of the legislation, but opponents, including law enforcement agencies, have raised concerns about possible damage to state infrastructure and safety on the roads. Railway groups also are opposed to the bill. ....
