CR parents proposing athletic facility upgrades


Some parents and boosters in the Chestnut Ridge School District are asking school officials to consider upgrading the district’s athletic facilities.
A group representing the Chestnut Ridge Touchdown Club football booster club briefly spoke to the district school board at its meeting Tuesday night about their hopes for larger weight room, as well as new facilities and turf for the football field.
“We’re behind the times,” said Jamie Ickes, who spoke on behalf of the group.
Ickes said the group’s top priority is a bigger weight room for student athletes, saying the current room is not large enough to accommodate more than about a dozen students at a time. ....

CR approves updated comprehensive plan


The Chestnut Ridge School District’s school board on Tuesday approved an updated comprehensive plan that focuses on better preparing students for post-secondary success.
The comprehensive plan spans July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2024, and is a requirement of the Pennsylvania Department of Education. It lists its established priorities as positioning students for the post-secondary workforce through science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)-related fields, increasing test scores for all students, and preparing students to compete and thrive in post-secondary education settings.
The document outlines numerous action plans in order for the district to meet certain goals, according to a copy of the plan on the district’s website. ....

Schools get $2.2B in virus aid | News, Sports, Jobs

HARRISBURG Gov. Tom Wolf is dedicating $2.2 billion in federal stimulus funds to K-12 school districts and charter schools affected by the COVID-19 pandemic to support food programs, technological improvements and other education services.
“All schools have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and I commend school communities for rising to the challenge to combat the toll it has taken,” Wolf said. “This extra funding is critical to help schools meet the unique needs of educating students at this time while keeping school buildings safe when students return to the classroom.”
The federal relief is provided by the bipartisan Coronavirus Response and Relief Congress passed the Supplemental Appropriations Act’s Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund in December. ....
