Hakeem Jeffries on Maya Wiley and Eric Adams

SHARE:
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the fifth-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives, shook up the New York City mayor’s race by throwing his support behind Maya Wiley in the Democratic primary earlier this month. The endorsement provided a major boost to Wiley, a former counsel to Mayor Bill de Blasio. It also put the rumored rivalry between Jeffries and one of Wiley’s opponents, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, into the spotlight.
Jeffries talked to City & State about why he backed Wiley and how, despite persistent “political gossip,” he has “nothing but respect” for Adams. The borough president also denied any discord. However, from their roots representing overlapping districts in the state legislature, the pair have notably ended up on the opposite sides of multiple political fights as they tried to play kingmaker in Central Brooklyn. With the mayor’s race in full swing, the pair find themselves at odds again with Adams trying to maintain his status as a frontrunner and Jeffries placing his bet on the insurgent Wiley. It’s a clear fault line through the heart of Brooklyn’s political landscape.

More than 50 people filed paperwork with the city to run for New York City Mayor this election cycle, and that number has been winnowed down to 12 Democratic and two Republican candidates who will appear on the ballot come the June 22nd primary. (Note: Early voting starts on June 12th.)
So far we’ve focused our coverage around front-runners who have raised enough money to qualify for matching public funds, which could catapult their campaigns to the next level. That list is long to begin with, and includes: Eric Adams, Shaun Donovan, Kathryn Garcia, Ray McGuire, Diane Morales, Scott Stringer, Maya Wiley and Andrew Yang on the Democratic side. You can read more about those candidates here.

Dawson, Officials Celebrate Girls Club Groundbreaking | The Lo-Down : News from the Lower East Side

Photo by William Alatriste, New York City Council.
It’s safe to say no other neighborhood organization does “photo ops” quite as well as the Lower East Side Girls Club. Today, however, was a special occasion. This morning, Girls Club supporters came to 101 Avenue D to celebrate a big achievement — the beginning of construction on the group’s new 30,000 sq/ft headquarters.
Lots of elected officials were there, including Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Councilmember Rosie Mendez, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, State Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh and State Senator Daniel Squadron.  Of more interest to the pack of photographers elbowing their way through the construction site: LES native and longtime Girls Club supporter Rosario Dawson, who emceed the event.

NEW YORK, NY (12/14/2020) (readMedia)-- Today, 23 women candidates for New York City Council wrote an open letter in support of Ranked Choice Voting, arguing that it will help elect more women -- women of color in particular -- by eliminating the spoiler effect and decreasing negative attacks.
"Rather than seeking to delay ranked choice voting, we need the Council to pass Intro 1994 which would fund and mandate a full voter education campaign. The Council has the power to make sure its stated goals of educating voters are fulfilled. Use it. As candidates, we also understand that we have a responsibility, alongside city agencies, to educate the voters and we don't shy from that opportunity."
