When a young gunman murdered ten people at a supermarket in Boulder, a place I’d been in the week before the shooting, I was reading the letters of Mary McCarthy and Hannah Arendt. McCarthy and Arendt lived through terrible times, the worst being the Holocaust and then Vietnam; McCarthy lost both her parents to the Spanish Flu. In their letters I was struck by some parallels to our time: a friend and I had discussed, in letters, whether to stay or leave the country if Trump was reelected; McCarthy and Arendt did the same about Johnson and the escalating war in Vietnam; our fears of Trump echoed theirs of Nixon (though I’m not sure they could have imagined the disaster of the Trump presidency). Camp Amache Takes New Step to Become National Park : The Prowers Journal


 
Congressman Ken Buck (R-Colo.) and Congressman Joe Neguse (D-Colo.), Chair of the U.S. House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands, introduced bipartisan legislation to designate Amache, a former Japanese American relocation center in Granada, Colorado as a National Park.
The Amache National Historic Act (H.R. 2497) follows up on the Amache Study Act, introduced by Rep. Buck and Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) and Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), which was included in the Dingell Conservation Act and signed into law by President Donald Trump in 2019. This bill directed the Department of Interior to conduct a special resource study at Amache to assess the historical significance of Amache and determine the feasibility of Amache becoming a part of the National Park System. ....

Local governments will reap millions of dollars from American Rescue Plan

Governments in the Roaring Fork Valley are projected to reap big windfalls from the American Rescue Plan Act, according to information provided by U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse, a Democrat from Colorado.
President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus bill provides $350 billion in emergency funding for state and local governments. Neguse, who voted for the relief package, posted on his website the estimates
of how much every county and municipality in Colorado will receive.
In the upper Roaring Fork Valley, Pitkin County will receive an estimated $3 million. Eagle and Garfield counties, with much larger populations, will reap substantially more. Eagle County will get an estimated $11 million. Garfield County is in line for $12 million. ....
