Ken Giffin
R-T Correspondent
Indiana celebrated its bicentennial just five years ago, and Morgan County is on the eve of its own bicentennial year, the county having been established by the Indiana General Assembly in 1822.

Jeff Rankin: Historic Monmouth store fell victim to retail trends

Jeff Rankin: Historic Monmouth store fell victim to retail trends
Jeff Rankin
The Rankin File
As long ago as the early 1960s, downtown Monmouth merchants were worried about the encroachment of shopping centers and discount stores on traditional retail establishments. We know now that they had good reason to worry.
One of those merchants was about as traditional as you could find. Fred Schmitz, who for more than a quarter century ran a fabric store on the Public Square, showing up every day wearing a white shirt and bowtie, announced in 1963 that he was going to retire. His wife, Mary, whose name he had combined with his own to christen the store Mayfred’s in 1937, had died the previous year, and he likely felt the time had come to gracefully bow out of the business. ....

I noticed that Stonewall Jackson is coming down. I wonder is it George Washington next week and is it Thomas Jefferson the week after? You know, you really do have to ask yourself, where does it stop?” Donald Trump
Today, President Trump is being universally denounced in the media for his insane assertion that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson are next, while numerous think pieces are being prepared for publication tomorrow on why, now that we think about it, tearing down statues of Washington and Jefferson
is demanded by the fight against white supremacy, the right side of history, the current year, and resistance to Trump. ....

Taft Natatorium

Taft Midway Driller
The Natatorium will not be opening in 2021 and may not open for several years, if ever.
The community s pool, currently owned and operated by the West Side Recreation and Park District, needs about $350,000 in repairs just to get it opened again.
The facility, which is at least 80 years, is going to need future repairs and it is expensive for the district to operate, officials said.
District Administrator Les Clark III said the pool has been losing about $100,000 per year in operating costs beyond the necessary repairs.
It was closed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Clark said the repairs are stacking up and its been operating on a year-to-year basis. ....
