Clinics open vaccine appointments to patients age 12-15

Kids ages 12 to 15 are now able to get the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services announced in a press release this week.Â
The other two available vaccines â Moderna and Johnson & Johnson Janssen â are authorized for people aged 18 or older. However, state medical experts have said Modernaâs authorization could come soon.Â
After the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the emergency use of the vaccine for young teens on Monday, the Kodiak Island Ambulatory Care Clinic began receiving dozens of requests for vaccine appointments.
The clinic has administered about a dozen Pfizer vaccines per day to 12- to 15-year-olds, said Dr. John Koller, who runs the clinic. He said that he expects many more appointments over the weekend.Â ....

Kodiak to yellow status, capacity moves to 50%

Kodiak changed its pandemic alert status from red to yellow today as the island sees its third consecutive day with no COVID-related hospitalizations and the number of daily positive cases continues to drop.Â
The Kodiak Emergency Services Council announced the change on Thursday, the same day Gov. Mike Dunelavy extended the stateâs Public Health Disaster Emergency Declaration for another month to Feb. 14.Â
The change to yellow status means the customer capacity of Kodiak businesses increases from 25% to 50%. This includes retail services, bars, restaurants, religious gatherings, grocery stores and any business or service open to the public.Â
Medical facilities, child care services, homeless shelters, educational institutions, government agencies and critical infrastructure are exempt from this cap.Â ....
