Pamplin Media Group - County: Forest Grove detective misused facial recognition program

May 19 2021
Cop called BLM protester possible antifa while running photo. Washington County sheriff promptly shut off access.
Months before an intoxicated off-duty Forest Grove police officer acted threateningly toward a family flying a Black Lives Matter flag, Washington County authorities determined that another Forest Grove police officer unlawfully ran a peaceful BLM protester through facial recognition technology.
The incident last June, which was not reported publicly at the time, led the Washington County Sheriff s Office, which operated the program, to immediately shut off Forest Grove police access.
Forest Grove Chief Henry Reimann went public about the incident earlier this month after the Pamplin Media Group sent him questions about it by email. He posted a letter from the chief on the city s website saying the facial recognition incident was an example of Forest Grove officials identifying and addressing mistakes. ....

Pamplin Media Group - OPINION: Victim of attack ponders the fate of the officer involved

April 06 2021
Mirella Castaneda says she doesn t think Forest Grove Police Officer Steven Teets should keep his badge.
Until Forest Grove Police Officer Steven Teets accepts a plea deal or is convicted in court, it s unclear what consequences he will face for his drunken, violent attack on Mirella Castaneda s home last Oct. 31.
If Washington County offered an official Restorative Justice program for adult defendants, Castaneda might have felt more in control of the process. Restorative Justice empowers victims by letting them shape more creative and transformative consequences for their offenders than the regular criminal-justice system allows.
But it also often involves victim and perpetrator sitting down together to talk about what happened, which wouldn t work for Castaneda, who is still too afraid of Teets to face him in person. ....

Pamplin Media Group - Column: Doubts about police case lead reporter on quest for answers

April 01 2021
A chance run-in with Forest Grove s police chief led a retired journalist down the rabbit hole to find the truth.
Part 1 of a series
A few months ago, I ran into Forest Grove Police Chief Henry Reimann outside the city library. I was on my way out after picking up some books and he was on his way in to record Is Your Mama a Llama? for the library s online storytime program.
As a member of the Forest Grove chapter of Showing Up for Racial Justice, I d gotten to know Reimann a bit and found him open and easygoing. So I asked if he had any updates on the Steven Teets case. You may have heard of it: an early morning attack by an intoxicated man on a Forest Grove family s home last Oct. 31. ....
