New director aims to take state parks to 'next level'


He has hunted, hiked and fished his way around the state with his family.

“I think sometimes in New Mexico we take for granted all of the public land access that we have,” Velasquez said. “We have so many opportunities for outdoor recreation.”
New Mexico’s 35 state parks are housed under the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department.

Velasquez, a Mora High School graduate and New Mexico Highlands University alum, started his State Parks career 30 years ago as a seasonal employee, then a park ranger.

Lujan looks for federal funds to plug abandoned oil and gas wells


Federal dollars could be on the way to help plug abandoned oil and gas wells in New Mexico and across the U.S.
U.S. Sen. Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM) introduced legislation this week to unlock more federal funding for work to plug and remediate wells abandoned by operators – often when they go bankrupt – which could pose environmental and public health risks when idled.
There are about 700 such wells known in New Mexico, with the state’s Oil Conservation Division – an arm of the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) – able to fund remediation of about 50 wells per year. ....
